Environmental Scientist Intern
Reports to: Environmental Scientist I (Trainer)
Position Summary: The Environmental Science Intern will work to develop projects for clients. The overriding goal is to give the candidate real-world tasks, to be part of the team/business unit, and acclimate them to the overall process. The desired candidate will:
- Work with the trainer and Environmental Scientist II to develop and implement solutions to project needs.
- Performs a variety of tasks which are intended to provide experience and interaction with higher-level staff, methods, practices, programs, and culture of the corporation.
- Assist in assignments that may include some work that is typical of an Environmental Scientist I. Prepares, or assists in the preparation of, documents, details, schedules or reports as assigned.
- Provide professional, technical day-to-day support and input.
- This is a developmental position in which the intern learns the responsibilities of an scientist and incorporates academic knowledge into hands-on work.
Qualifications:
- Recent degree or current enrollment in an environmental program, including high GPA, willingness to learn new skills, flexible schedule and strong organizational and communications skills.
- Basic knowledge and experience using computer-aided design and drafting, spreadsheets (MS Excel) and word processing programs (MS Word).
Responsibilities: Assist the trainer in:
- Environmental Compliance
- Locating, researching, and disseminating current information for environmental regulations for states and municipalities in the southeast.
- Permit application support and writing for various types of environmental sites in the southeast.
- Permit application review and quality control for internal HHNT work within your discipline and regulatory file review.
- Day-to-day technical support, guidance and input and other duties as assigned.
- Supporting and performing field work.
- Supporting wetland studies, delineation, threatened and endangered species assessments, etc.
- Report writing including jurisdictional determination request (JDR), threatened and endangered species assessments, etc.
- Writing Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SP3) and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plans (SPCC) for various sites in the Southeast.
- Preparing GIS figures as needed.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Working independently by:
- Using independent judgment in completing drawings, calculations, etc. which are reviewed by a Project Manager or higher to ensure the work conforms to the overall design parameters.
- Researching local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Organizing and maintaining project files.
- Maintaining a neat and organized work area which allows efficient access to information required by other team members.
- Using attention to detail to assure that drawings and designs are in accordance with company production and design standards.
- Communicating with the Trainer to keep them informed of workload and any changes in project scope or additional services.
- Inputting data into pre- written computer programs.
- Learning to become proficient in the use of a computer for design and GIS.

- Stormwater Pollution and Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
- Discharge Monitoring Reports for Leachate and Stormwater (DMR’s)
- Methane Monitoring Reports
- GIS Mapping
- Quarterly Tonnage Reports
- Air Permits
Availability: Work in the office 8:00-5:30 Monday – Thursday and 8:00-4:30 Friday. One hour, between 11:30-1:00, may be used for lunch. If required to work more than 40 hours/week, you will be paid overtime.
