Engineering Intern
Locations: Macon or Statesboro, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; Little Rock, Arkansas
Accountable to: Project Engineer I (Trainer)
Position Summary: The Civil and Environmental Engineer Intern will work alongside other interns of varying skill sets to develop projects for clients. The overriding goal is to give the candidate real-world tasks, to be part of the team/business unit, and acclimate them to the overall process. The desired candidate will:
- Work with the Project Manager and Project Engineer II to develop and implement engineering solutions to project needs.
- Performs a variety of tasks which are intended to provide experience and interaction with higher-level staff, methods, practices, programs, and culture of the corporation.
- Assist in assignments that may include some work that is typical of a Project Engineer I. Prepares, or assists in the preparation of, engineering documents, details, schedules or reports as assigned.
- Provide professional, technical day-to-day support and input.
- This is a developmental position in which the intern learns the responsibilities of an engineer and incorporates academic knowledge into hands-on work.
Qualifications:
- Recent degree or current enrollment in an engineering program, including high GPA, willingness to learn new skills, flexible schedule and strong organizational and communications skills.
- Basic knowledge and experience using computer-aided design and drafting, spreadsheets (MS Excel) and word processing programs (MS Word).
Responsibilities: Assist the Project Manager in:
- The development and design of civil and environmental projects which consist of plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Developing feasible design alternatives and comparing significant parameters such as typical sections, project layout, grading, and drainage calculations.
- The review of detailed plans, specifications and estimate of cost to ensure conformity with the project scope and design standards.
- Reviewing design details and coordinate technical recommendations, assessing the cost-effective constructability of the project and generally evaluating the quality of the project.
- Day-to-day technical support, guidance and input and other duties as assigned.
- Making calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design such as storm drainage, grading and piping system.
- Creating specialized drawings and calculations such as volumes, isopach grading, and graphic presentations.
- Researching design details and document findings for Project Designer / Engineer.
- Providing information to Project Engineer II or Project Manager for incorporation into specifications.
- Reviewing shop drawings and construction submittals
- Visiting construction sites with the project manager to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.
